Toll Tips for Out-of-State & Out-of-Country Visitors

For travelers crossing the Golden Gate Bridge in vehicles with license plates from out-of-state or from another country, there are several ways to pay your toll electronically. If you cross the Bridge in a rental vehicle, you must check with your rental company about its tolling program, if one is offered. Visit our Rental Vehicles section for complete details.

Tolls for the Golden Gate Bridge are collected in one direction only – when travelling southbound into San Francisco.

Suggestions for Short-Term Visitors

If you are visiting the San Francisco Bay Area with out-of-state or out-of-country license plates and plan on crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, your best toll payment options are a One-Time Payment or a License Plate Account. Both options are described below.

A One-Time Payment is exactly that - you pay your toll, one payment at a time. One-Time Payments can be made up to 30 days before crossing the Bridge or within 48 hours after crossing the Bridge. They can be made using a credit card - either online (click button below) or over the phone (call 1-877-229-8655 or 415-486-8655 from outside the USA) - or in person using cash at a Cash Payment Location (click button below) or the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center (375 Beale Street, San Francisco). For vehicles with out-of-country license plates, you may pay in person at the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center.

Short-term visitors may also consider a License Plate Account. A License Plate Account can be opened online with a credit card, with the end date of your visit to the Bay Area. There is nothing more - the credit card on file will be charged the appropriate toll each time you cross the Bridge during your stay. If you prefer to fund a License Plate Account using cash, you must maintain a small toll balance equivalent to one toll payment.

Suggestions for Extended Stay Visitors

If you are visiting the San Francisco Bay Area for a longer period of time with out-of-state or out-of-country license plates and plan on crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, your best toll payment options are a FasTrak Account or a License Plate Account.

FasTrak is the most convenient toll-payment method for any driver who uses Bay Area toll bridges and Express Lanes, or Southern California Toll Roads more than once a year. Plus, FasTrak users pay a discounted toll on the Golden Gate Bridge. A FasTrak Account can be set up easily using a credit card online (click button below) or over the phone (call 1-877-229-8655 or 415-486-8655 from outside the USA). A prepaid balance is required.
