Paying a Toll for a Rental Vehicle

gg_bridgesouthwest

Golden Gate Bridge tolls are assessed in the southbound direction only, going into San Francisco. Before driving a rental vehicle over the Golden Gate Bridge, customers are strongly encouraged to speak with their rental agency about how it processes Bay Area tolls.

To avoid confusion, please:

  1. Speak with your rental agency about how it assesses tolls in the Bay Area, and the Golden Gate Bridge, in particular.
  2. Ask if you have to Opt-In or Opt-Out of the agency's tolling program, if one is offered.
  3. Ask about convenience or service fees that may be assessed after your trip by the rental agency or its affiliates.
  4. Visit our Rental Toll Program page for a list of rental agencies in the San Francisco area to learn more about what tolling programs are offered and how to pay your Golden Gate Bridge toll.

If Your Rental Agency Offers a Tolling Program

Option 1: Opt-In to the Rental Agency Tolling Program

This is the most seamless and convenient option. Note: Most rental agencies charge convenience fees to use their tolling programs. Be sure to ask your rental agent for more information.

Option 2: Opt-Out of the Rental Agency Tolling Program

If you prefer to decline the agency's tolling program, (1) Ask your rental agent how to Opt-Out and then follow their instructions, and (2) Decide how and when you will pay your Golden Gate Bridge toll. You can pay your Bridge toll by making a One-Time Payment up to 30 days before crossing the Bridge or within 48 hours after crossing the Bridge.

Motorists may make a One-Time Payment using any of the following methods:

  1. Online using a credit card: Visit www.bayareafastrak.org.
  2. By phone using a credit card: Call toll-free 1-877-229-8655 or 415-486-8655 outside the US.
  3. In person using cash: Visit a Cash Payment Location.
  4. In person using a credit card, cash, check, money order: Visit the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center (375 Beale Street, San Francisco).

You may also open a limited duration License Plate Account before crossing the Golden Gate Bridge. To ensure the License Plate Account is only active for the length of the rental period, you must be sure to include the end date of your rental contract as the "Closure Date" when completing the application.
