Pay Toll for Vehicle with No License Plate

Motorists in vehicles without a license plate are still responsible for paying the Golden Gate Bridge toll. Tolls are assessed in the southbound direction only, heading into San Francisco.

Until your license plates are properly mounted on the front and rear of your vehicle, there are four ways to pay your toll.

Ways to Pay

  1. Open a FasTrak Account: Purchasing a FasTrak toll tag for $25 ($20 refundable deposit and $5 in prepaid tolls) at Costco or Walgreens (visit the Bay Area FasTrak website to find a location near you). Once you purchase the toll tag, you must register it by calling the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center at 1-877-229-8655 or 415-486-8655 outside the USA. Have the toll tag number and activation code ready. Your tolls can then be deducted easily from your FasTrak Account. Be sure to add your license plate information to your FasTrak account once you receive your plates.
  2. Make a One-Time Payment using a credit card: Visit www.bayareafastrak.org. Please have your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) handy.
  3. Make a One-Time Payment in person: Visit a Cash Payment Location. Payments can be made up to 30 days before crossing the Bridge or within 48 hours after crossing the Bridge. You can pay for up to 10 toll crossings at a time. Please keep your receipt!
  4. Make a One-Time Payment in person: Visit the Bay Area FasTrak Customer Service Center (375 Beale Street, San Francisco).

Note: Beginning January 1, 2019, all newly purchased California vehicles come with either temporary or permanent license plates. Also, in California, vehicles without properly-mounted license plates are in violation of California Vehicle Code Section 5200.
