General Information

Golden Gate Transit provides regional fixed-route bus service in San Francisco, and in Marin and Sonoma counties. Bus service is also available between San Rafael in central Marin and the El Cerrito del Norte BART Station in western Contra Costa County.

Local bus service is provided within Marin County under contract with Marin Transit.

Service runs daily, with reduced service on weekends and certain holidays (New Year's, Martin Luther King Jr., Presidents', Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving, and Christmas days, and the Friday after Thanksgiving Day).

The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District operates its programs and services without regard to race, color, or national origin in accordance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which provides that no person shall, on the grounds of race, color or national origin, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subjected to discrimination in the provision of public transit services. Types of Service

Golden Gate Transit operates regional bus service between San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Contra Costa counties. The District sets most service levels and fares. Service is divided into regional and commute service, ferry shuttles, and local bus service, as follows:

  • Regional service: Regional bus routes provide daily service throughout the day and evening between San Francisco, Marin, Sonoma, and Contra Costa counties. Regional service includes Routes 30, 40, 40X, 70, 101, and 101X.
  • Commute service: Commute bus routes provide commute period service, mornings and evenings, Monday through Friday, except holidays, between San Francisco, Marin, and Sonoma counties. Commute service includes Routes 2, 4, 4C, 8, 18, 24, 24C, 24X, 27, 38, 38A, 54, 54C, 56X, 58, 72, 72X, 74, 76, and 92.
  • Ferry shuttles: Ferry shuttle Route 25 provides service to/from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal along the Sir Francis Drake Blvd corridor on weekdays, except holidays. 
  • Local bus service is service within a single county and operates daily. Local bus service within Marin County operates daily, with limited weekend service on certain routes. Golden Gate Transit operates Routes 17, 23, 23X, 29, 35, 36, and 71X under contract with Marin Transit (other contractors operate other bus and shuttle services within Marin). Marin Transit determines the level of all local services and the fares for most services.     Riding Golden Gate Transit within San Francisco is permitted to and from bus stops located at the Golden Gate Bridge Toll Plaza and at Richardson Ave & Francisco St/Lyon St only. 
  • Paratransit service: Golden Gate Transit provides intercounty paratransit service through most of our service area. This service is operated by Whistlestop Wheels and complements our regular intercounty non-commute, off-peak bus service. Customer Service Center (511/TDD 711)

The Golden Gate Customer Service Center is located at the San Rafael Transit Center (3rd & Hetherton Streets). It's our hub of personnel trained in assisting customers with trip planning, lost and found, and general information. Assistance is available in over 150 languages.

Hours of operation are 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays. The Center is closed on weekends and on New Year's, Presidents', Memorial, Independence, Labor, Thanksgiving, and Christmas days.
