Ride GGF's New Weekday Commute Service Between Tiburon & San Francisco

February 24, 2017 12:00 AM

Golden Gate Ferry to Commence Tiburon-San Francisco Commute Service on March 6, 2017

For the first time in forty years, Golden Gate Ferry will expand its Marin County service area. Golden Gate Ferry currently serves passengers from the Larkspur Ferry Terminal and the Sausalito Landing. Beginning on Monday, March 6th, 2017, Golden Gate Ferry will begin commute service from Tiburon.

In 2015, Blue & Gold Fleet began discussions with Golden Gate Ferry about taking over Blue & Gold's commute ferry runs between Tiburon and San Francisco. Discussions expanded to include the underlying property owners AC Ventures, and neighboring operator Angel Island Tiburon Ferry. Discussions have successfully concluded with all parties. On Friday, February 24th, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District Board of Directors voted to approve the sublease agreement with Blue & Gold Fleet.

"Golden Gate ferries and buses already reduce traffic congestion by 25% on the Golden Gate Bridge and Highway 101 corridor," says District General Manager Denis Mulligan. "Adding this new service area helps us fulfill our mission to keep traffic flowing smoothly across the Bridge by transporting commuters through alternate means across the Bay."

Golden Gate Ferry Deputy General Manager Jim Swindler adds, "We're looking forward to serving this community with excellent, reliable service. Bay Area ferry ridership has been steadily growing over the past several years as customers recognize travel by water as quick and pleasant way to travel."

"We believe that the Golden Gate Ferry will provide a reliable and safe commute service and is an outstanding company to operate the Tiburon Commute," said Patrick Murphy, President of Blue & Gold. "Blue & Gold has been proud to serve the Tiburon commute passengers since 1997, and we look forward to continuing to serve the community through our mid-day and late-night service. We thank our passengers for their many years of support."

Blue & Gold Fleet has been operating the Tiburon Commute since 1997. The determination for the Company to get out of the commute service in Tiburon was a business decision. Blue & Gold Fleet's Tiburon Ferry was the only privately-operated commute ferry service on the Bay and it does not receive any public funding.

While various Golden Gate Ferry vessels will be used to serve this new route, the primary vessel will be the M.V. Del Norte which is having a door modified to better suit the landing in Tiburon. Blue & Gold commute tickets will be accepted at the start of service, but Golden Gate Ferry will bring the Clipper fare payment system to Tiburon customers for the first time.
