The Federal Transit Administration (FTA) announced today that Golden Gate Ferry has been awarded a $6 million federal grant to rehabilitate the Sausalito ferry terminal and boarding systems. Sausalito serves over 500,000 annual ferry riders making trips between the North Bay and San Francisco.

This major investment helps Golden Gate Ferry continue providing safe and reliable ferry service to and from Sausalito for years to come. The project will replace piers and gangways that were built in the 1970s and have exceeded their useful life.

“With the influx of funding thanks to the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and Democrats’ appropriation bills, we are continuing to improve our outdated transportation and infrastructure sector. And for regions like the Bay Area, ferries are an important facet of the public transportation system that get high use from commuters and visitors alike,” said Representative Jared Huffman. “After years of advocating on behalf of these local programs, I’m excited to see them get these funds to revitalize the ferry fleet and give passengers a safer, more reliable, and greener mode of transportation.”

“We want to thank the Federal Transit Administration, Secretary Buttigieg, Senators Padilla and Butler, Speaker Emerita Pelosi, Congressman Huffman, and the entire Bay Area delegation for their continued support of Bay Area transit and for their major investment in our fast, reliable, and beautiful ferry systems,” said Denis Mulligan, General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. “This grant will make our Sausalito terminal safer, more reliable, and more accessible while encouraging more sustainable first and last mile connections to our ferries.”

The Sausalito Ferry Terminal Improvement Project will improve boarding and unloading for all passengers, including bicyclists and disabled users, during all tide conditions. The project includes the replacement of the existing steel float with a new concrete float, replacement of the approach pier, replacement of gangways, and installation of new lighting and utilities.

The total project cost is $22.5 million, with matching funds coming from Golden Gate Bridge toll revenues ($4.4 million) and committed federal formula funds ($12 million). The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
