Transferring & Connecting

Transfers may be made within the Golden Gate Transit and Ferry system and transfer credits may be available when transferring between Golden Gate and other Bay Area transit operators.

Within the Golden Gate System

A Golden Gate Transit paper transfer may be used up to three times within a two-hour period if traveling within one county or within three hours if traveling between counties. Your transfer can be used to complete a one-way trip or a round trip within a single county. 

When using a Clipper card, transfers are handled automatically. Always remember to tag on and tag off when riding Golden Gate Transit buses. 

Transfers between Golden Gate Transit buses: If paying your fare with cash, tell the driver your final destination when boarding your bus and ask for a transfer. If using a Clipper card, simply tag on and off each bus.

Transfers from Golden Gate Ferry to Golden Gate Transit: Pay your ferry fare when entering the ferry terminal (ferry ticket or Clipper card) and then your bus fare when boarding a bus. If paying with a Clipper card, tag on when entering the ferry terminal, and then tag on and tag off when boarding/getting off the bus. 

Transfers from Golden Gate Transit to Golden Gate Ferry: Tell the driver your final destination and deposit the full transbay fare into the farebox when boarding the bus. The driver will issue you a paper transfer which you will present to the terminal agent at the ferry terminal. If using a Clipper card, simply tag on and tag off the bus and then tag on again when entering the ferry terminal faregate. 


Transfers to/from SF Muni (San Francisco Municipal Transportation Authority)

Transfers may be made between Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry and SF Muni at many locations in San Francisco. 

Transfer credits are automatically issued to Clipper card users only; there is no transfer credit available for cash-paying customers.

Transfers from Golden Gate Ferry/Golden Gate Transit to Muni: $0.50 fare credit for adults when boarding Muni within 2 hours; no fare credit for youth/senior/disabled or Muni pass holders.

Transfers from Muni to Golden Gate Ferry/Golden Gate Transit: $0.50 fare credit for adults ($0.25 for youth/senior/disabled) when boarding Golden Gate Ferry/Golden Gate Transit within 2 hours.


Transfers to/from Sonoma-Marin Area Rail Transit District (SMART Train)

Transfers may be made between Golden Gate Transit and Golden Gate Ferry and the SMART train at several locations in Marin and Sonoma counties. 

Transfer credits are automatically issued to Clipper card users only; there is no transfer credit available for cash-paying customers or when using a SMART eTicket.

Transfers from Golden Gate Ferry/Golden Gate Transit to SMART: $1.50 fare credit for adults, $1.25 fare credit for youth, $0.75 fare credit for senior/disabled.

Transfers from SMART to Golden Gate Ferry/Golden Gate Transit: $1.50 fare credit for adults, $0.75 fare credit for youth/senior/disabled.
