In early 2005, the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District) engineering staff conducted an evaluation of the design and location of the Golden  Gate Transit (GGT) and Muni bus stops and pedestrian crosswalks within the District’s right of way near the Golden Gate Bridge with respect to public safety, convenience, and accessibility.

As a result, the southbound GGT bus stop, located about 230 feet south of the toll plaza, is being relocated to new location that will be safer for both bus riders and pedestrians alike. The southbound stop will be relocated closer to the toll plaza, using a portion of the existing parking lot adjacent to the administration building. Two pedestrian crosswalks will also be relocated (see diagram).

The first phase of construction begins on November 1, 2005, when toll booth #1, located far right (west) side of toll plaza, will be temporarily closed through mid-December, 2005. The existing GGT bus stop will not be impacted during this portion of the construction and will continue to be served.

Toll booth #1 is being closed to allow the contractor to safely execute changes in the vicinity of the new GGT bus stop location including implementing modifications to the existing sidewalks, curbs, gutters, and lightposts, and installation new underground utilities.

Once this preparation work is completed, the installation of the new bus stop with a new bus shelter work can begin. Installation of the new shelter is anticipated to begin in mid-December 2005 and be completed in January 2006.  All work on the southbound 101 bus stop improvements is currently scheduled for completion by mid-March, 2006.

The evaluation also showed that improvements are recommended for the northbound GGT bus stop at the toll plaza and for three MUNI bus stops in the immediate Toll Plaza vicinity.  This work will be done from approximately mid-December 2005 through March 2006.

The evaluation was performed in anticipation of grant funding becoming available to make improvements to bus stops and pedestrian crosswalks at the toll plaza.  With a total project budget of $1.2 million, the construction will be done in several phases.  The $1.2 million project is being funded with 83% of funds coming from the Federal Transit Administration, and the remaining 17% coming from District toll dollars.
