Art That Heals – Earth Day Every Day

To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Earth Day on April 22, 2020, the husband and wife team of environmental artist George and Donnalei Sumner have once-again collaborated with Golden Gate Transit to create a new whale bus. The bus is already in service on the streets of Marin, Sonoma, and San Francisco counties spreading a message of environmental protection and conservation.

The new Earth Day bus is decorated in mural artwork created by George Sumner and depicts the many different whales that visit Monterey Bay. The bus artwork also includes a message that Earth Day is every day as we celebrate 50 years of both Earth Day and George’s career as an environmental artist.

This is the fourth Golden Gate Transit bus that the Sumners have adorned with their art and messages to remind our community of the beauty and importance of nature and our responsibility to help preserve it.

This bus replaces the beloved “Humphrey the Whale” bus that was hand-painted by George and was in service for nearly 10 years.  George and Donnalei Sumner have taken the whale buses to schools in the Bay Area for almost three decades with the message that the bus is a lifeline for those who need transportation and a reminder that using public transportation helps protect our environment.
