The Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District (District) Board of Directors voted unanimously at their December 2021 meeting to appoint Michael Theriault as Board President, effective January 1, 2022. President Theriault succeeds outgoing Board President Barbara Pahre, who represents Napa County and has served as President since 2019.

“It has been an honor to serve in a leadership capacity for our community during these unprecedented times,” said outgoing President Pahre. “President Theriault’s extensive experience on the Board and in the community means the District is in good hands moving forward.”

“I want to thank President Pahre for all of her hard work and leadership over the years and particularly for leading us through the unique challenges posed by the pandemic,” said incoming President Theriault. “I look forward to building upon her legacy of transparent, thoughtful, and responsive stewardship at the District.”

President Theriault represents the City and County of San Francisco and is appointed to the District Board by the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He was first appointed to the Board in 2011 and served as First Vice President in 2021.

President Theriault has had a distinguished career in the building trades as both an ironworker and business representative. He served as Secretary-Treasurer of the San Francisco Building and Construction Trades Council for 13 years where he negotiated and helped administer many successful project labor agreements, helped reestablish shop classes at the San Francisco Unified School District, and navigated the Council through financial uncertainty, among many other accomplishments. President Theriault joined Ironworkers Local 377 in 1985 and served as a job steward, foreman, and general foreman before becoming a union organizer and business representative. He was born and raised in San Francisco and has held leadership roles at public and community service organizations including the San Francisco Building Inspection Commission, the Workforce Investment Board of San Francisco, the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee for the San Francisco Unified School District, Young Community Developers, the San Francisco Labor Council, and the California State Building and Construction Trades Council. He is a member of the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition and rides with the San Francisco Randonneurs.
